Senior Engineer
A new country, a new start โ bringing two decades of craft to a fresh environment.
Starting Over, On Purpose
Moving countries means more than a change of address. It means rebuilding your professional network from scratch, navigating a new language and culture, and proving yourself again in rooms where nobody knows your track record.
Stepping back into a Senior Engineer role after years at the architect level was a deliberate choice โ to stay close to the code, to understand the new stack and domain deeply before leading it, and to earn the trust of a new team through contribution rather than title.
What I Created
- Inbound supply chain solutions enabling efficient planning and just-in-time delivery coordination across a high-volume logistics network
What I Learned
Building and operating cloud-native microservices for a large-scale e-commerce platform โ using Java and Kotlin, Kafka-based event streaming, PostgreSQL, and AWS โ deepened my ability to think in distributed systems. Every design decision had to account for scale, failure modes, and data consistency across independently deployable services.
This environment pushed high-scale system thinking from a concept into a daily discipline โ not just designing for the happy path, but engineering for resilience, observability, and the edge cases that only appear at volume.
Working within a global team also broadened how I think about collaboration itself. Different nationalities bring different communication styles, different expectations around directness, and different instincts about when to escalate versus when to resolve quietly. Navigating that diversity โ and finding the common ground that lets a team ship together โ turned out to be as valuable a skill as anything technical.
Building in a New Context
Germany brought a different engineering culture: methodical, thorough, and process-oriented. The problems were just as interesting โ inbound supply chain, logistics coordination, warehouse systems โ but the approach to solving them required recalibrating instincts built over two decades.
This chapter was about humility and adaptability. The experience and pattern recognition built across twenty years of building didn't disappear โ they just needed to be applied in a new key.
